Household Hazardous Waste/E Waste Collection Event 2008

On Saturday, September 27th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the District hosted a household hazardous waste (“HHW”) and electronics waste (“E-waste”) collection event. The event was a big success as evidenced by the large attendance and the comments received during and after the event - both from the public as well as professionals who have experience in holding such events. Photos of the event and feedback from two residents are attached.

A total of 432 vehicles brought HHW, E-waste and pharmaceuticals during the 5 hours. For comparison, according to Monterey Regional Waste Management District (“MRWMD”) records 222 vehicles delivered those types of waste to MRWMD’s Marina facility from Pebble Beach during the twelve–month period covering fiscal year 2007-08.

The following table provides the number of vehicles serviced by types of waste collected:

Some of the statistics of this year’s event:

Type of wasted collected # of Vehicles
HHW only 87
E-waste only 98

Medical waste only

6
Combination waste types 241
The following table displays the quantity of materials collected:
Type of material Amount
HHW 46,000 lbs. (23 tons)
E-Waste 78,000 lbs. (39 tons)
Medications/sharps 201 lbs.

District hired PARC Environmental Services of Fresno to collect, transport and dispose the HHW materials. The final cost for their service has not yet been determined, however, it is estimated to be approximately $40,000.

The District’s solid waste franchise holder, Carmel Marina Corporation, participated by providing staff and containers to collect and dispose all the E-waste at no cost to PBCSD. Advanced Waste Solutions of Marina collected medications and sharps. The company donated the staff time and charged PBCSD only for its disposal cost of $265. Monterey Regional Waste Management District (“MRWMD”) staff attended the event at no cost to PBCSD, and collected some reusable HHW items (paints, pesticides, cleaners etc.) to offer to public at their the Marina Last Chance Mercantile facility, free of charge. MRWMD collected 1240 lbs. of HHW which reduced the cost for PBCSD.

PBCSD Fire, Maintenance and Administration staff unloaded items from residents’ vehicles as they drove through the three collection points, directed traffic and greeted residents. There was a constant traffic flow during the five-hour event. The staff received compliments from residents regarding the organization and the exceptional service provided.  Overall it was a wonderful day for the environment and a positive event for everyone present.
